VARIOUS TYPES OF MENUS FOUND IN HOTELS



Breakfast menu

Breakfast is the first meal of the day served between 7 and 10 a.m. It offers all kinds of dishes that are suitable for breakfast. Continental breakfast, English breakfast, American breakfast, and Indian breakfast menus are the commonly found menus. It may be in the form of table d'hote and a la carte. 

Brunch menu

Brunch refers to heavy mid-morning snacks that combines breakfast and lunch, consumed late in the morning between 10 and 12. Sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, pastries, salads, vegetable patties, fried fish, steaks, cold and hot beverages are offered in this menu. Menu could be in the form of table d'hote or à la carte.

Luncheon menu

This menu includes dishes that are offered during lunch hours between 12 noon and 3 p.m. During weekdays most consumers do not have much time during lunch hours, so restaurants offer dishes that can be quickly prepared and served or have table d'hôte menus and serve buffet. Indian restaurants serve thalis of different kinds and executive lunch to speed up service and to meet the demands of consumers. An à la carte menu also offered together with table d'hôte menu in some restaurants.


Afternoon tea and high tea menu

It is served between 3 and 6 p.m. The menu includes bread, toasts, sandwiches, scones, pastries grills, fish, salads, kachori, samosa, cutlets, ice creams, and so on, with coffee or tea. The menu may be either ala carte or table d'hote.


Dinner menu


This menu includes dishes that are offered during dinner hours between 7 and 11 pm. During dinner, guests like to spend more time with their loved ones and entertain their business associates.

They expect a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience after a long day of work. To address therequirements of guests, restaurants offer exotic dishes at dinner. Some serve wines to complement the dishes served. Indian restaurants serve tandoori dishes of different kinds and rich biryani and grav ies. A à la carte menu is generally offered during this time, however table d'hôte menu is also available in the form of buffet service in most restaurants.


Supper menu

It is a light evening meal mostly taken before dinner during evening social events. It is also served late at night. The menu for supper varies according to the time of the night. It is usually offered in night clubs, casinos, coffee shops, and late night entertainment venues. Supper menu is usually an a la carte containing hot and cold dishes which are lighter and less elaborative than those served at dinner. Sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, salads, soups, light stews, fruits, beverages, and so on, may be served.

Function menus

These are special menus compiled for occasions, such as Christmas, New Year's Eve and for functions hosted by clients such as wedding anniversaries, birthday parties, and so on. Menus included for function catering depends on the type of function and price. The banquet department of a hotel normally keeps a menu folder containing menus of different price ranges and cuisines. It makes the job of the host easier to decide on the menu. Table d'hôte menu is offered in function catering in which drinks may or may not be included.

Room service menu

This menu contains list of dishes available for service in guest rooms around the clock. The list contains limited number of dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Prices quoted for dishes in the room service menu card are always higher than prices quoted for the same dishes served in other restaurants of the hotel.

Californian menu

It is a menu card of round-the-clock service, offering all the dishes of breakfast, lunch, snacks. dinner and beverages. The guest can order for any dish at any time, from simple to elaborate meal.

Diet menu

It is an important menu that is gaining importance in recent years as consumers health awareness has increased. Almost every guest nowadays demands gluten free, whole wheat, multigrain, chemical and artificial colour free food products. They like to have more of plain, steamed vegetables, little oil and plenty of yoghurt and fresh fruits in their menu. Diet menus include menus suitable for consumers suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, ulcer, and so on. These menus also have low calorie dishes

Crew menu

Some hotels have menus designed for crew members of airlines who regularly stay with them. The menu is available to them at special rates in arrangement with the airline company.

Happy hour menu

This menu is aimed at boosting the revenue through sale of food and beverages by offering reduced rates during lean time of the day, especially during evening hours between 4 and 6pm, of weekdays. The lean time may vary from place to place depending on the location of business.

Speciality Menu

It offers the special dishes of the day or week. Some hotels may organise Chinese week, Mexican week, and so on, to promote food and beverage sales. Menus offered during that time will have a list of dishes from a particular cuisine or region. It is mostly table d'hôte menu. Chefs also introduce daily specials during dinner time which is priced higher.
